Residents of Sloatsburg are encouraged to review the information below. The goal of this information is to assist, inform and update residents on general guidelines to maintain the Village of Sloatsburg’s neighborhoods and community.

Clubs & Organizations

American Legion

Sloatsburg American Legion Post 1643 is a service organization for all veterans.

The Legion maintains an office at Harmony Hall, 15 Liberty Rock Road, Sloatsburg, NY 10974.

Historical Society

Since 1979, the Sloatsburg Historical Society, SHS, has gathered monthly to promote and preserve the local history. They work closely with the Sloatsburg Library to collect and maintain historic documents and artifacts. In 2019, they sponsored the refurbishment of 5 Sloatsburg historic markers, and they maintain an annual tradition of conducting a historic tour of Sloatsburg for the 4th grade elementary students. The group actively promotes the awareness of local history through slide presentations, speaker programs and by publishing two books.

SHS is a federally tax-exempt 501c (3) non-profit organization and is chartered by the N.Y.S. Department of Education. The SHS depends on the generosity of organizations, businesses and individuals to fund its activities.

Meetings are open to the public and are held every 4th Monday of each month at 7:00PM in the Community Room at the Sloatsburg Public Library.

Ladies Auxiliary of the Sloatsburg Fire Department

The Ladies Auxiliary of the Sloatsburg Fire Department was organized on June 6, 1932 and their function is to support the Sloatsburg Fire Department when needed. Historically this function was to assemble food and refreshments for the firefighters while they were engaged in extended firefighting operations. As the organization has evolved, like most auxiliaries, the Ladies Auxiliary participates in various community functions, fundraisings to support our Fire Department and organizations within the Community.

New members always welcome. Meetings are held every 2nd Tuesday of each month at 7:00PM in the Fire Hall located at 96 Orange Turnpike, Sloatsburg, NY 10974.

Ramapo Valley Rotary

The Ramapo Valley Rotary members believe that we have a shared responsibility to take action on our world’s most persistent issues. They provide service to others, promote integrity, and advance world understanding, goodwill, and peace through their fellowship of business, professional, and community leaders. Their members see a world where people unite and take action to create lasting change — across the globe, in our communities, and in ourselves.

New members always welcome. Meetings are held Fridays at Rhodes Tavern, 40 Orange Turnpike Sloatsburg, NY and the last Friday of the month at Characters, 94 Orange Turnpike, Sloatsburg, NY. Meetings begin at 12:15pm.

Senior Citizens Center

The Sloatsburg Senior Citizens group was organized in 1972 and boasts a membership of over 90 members. Their weekly meetings consist of social gatherings with occasional guest speakers. Individuals residing within Sloatsburg aged 55 and over are welcome to join. The group meets every Wednesday at 1:00PM at the Sloatsburg Senior Citizens Center located at 8 Liberty Rock Road, Sloatsburg, NY 10974.

Chamber of Commerce

The Sloatsburg Chamber of Commerce is a non-profit community organization dedicated to promoting economic opportunity and improving local quality of life through advocacy, leadership, events, and education, all to benefit members and the wider corridor community in which they live.

The Chamber is also a proud partner of Rockland County Tourism and Explore HarrimanNY, which promotes western Rockland County's unique state park and outdoor experience.

Community Food Pantry

The Community Food Pantry services individuals and families living within Sloatsburg, Suffern, Hillburn and Tuxedo. Their mission is to work together as a community to provide supplemental, nutritionally balanced food to those in need while respecting the dignity of each person they serve.

The Community Food Pantry is located at All Souls Community Church, 81 Washington Avenue, Suffern, NY 10901.

Open every Tuesday 2:00 - 5:30 PM and Wednesday 1:00 - 6:30 PM. Appointments are required.

Essential Services

Ambulance

The Spring Hill Ambulance service is currently under contract by the Town of Ramapo to provide ambulance coverage for the Village of Sloatsburg. They have a dedicated ambulance that is stationed at Good Sam Hospital and responds when dispatched by the County 911 system.

Fire Department

The Sloatsburg Fire Department is one of the 26 fully volunteer fire departments in Rockland County, New York. The Sloatsburg Volunteer Fire Department is part of the Rockland County Mutual Aid Plan. The department also provides, through a contractual arrangement, fire protection services to the Ramapo Fire Protection District #2 and the Johnsontown Road Fire Protection District. Responding to over 120 emergency calls a year, our responses range from structural fires, automatic fire alarms, vehicle accidents & extrication , brush fires, and hazardous materials incidents. The nearly 60 active members unselfishly and proudly dedicate their extra time to ensure the safety and comfort of the Village of Sloatsburg's visitors and residents. Aside from responding to emergency calls, our volunteers train weekly and routinely attend full training courses at the Rockland County Fire Training Center. The expertise and professionalism of Rockland's Volunteer Firefighters undoubtedly saves tax payers millions of dollars each year.

Police

The Village of Sloatsburg is provided police coverage through the Town of Ramapo Police Department. Department Headquarters are located at 237 Route 59 Suffern, New York.

Sewer services are provided to the Village of Sloatsburg by the Rockland County Sewer District.

Sanitation

Sanitation services are provided through a contractual arrangement with Rockland Green.

Public Library

The Sloatsburg Public Library is located at 1 Liberty Rock Road. The Library is a unique New York State municipal library, with its own non-profit status and independent board of trustees appointed by the mayor.

The Library dates its origin to 1959 when a committee of 6 residents were appointed by then Sloatsburg Mayor John McAlevey. The committee began a book campaign to seed a public library. In 1967, the library officially became a village resource. It is composed of 2 connected historical Sloatsburg buildings that were originally part of St. Francis Episcopal Church, a mission church of St. Mary’s Episcopal Church in Tuxedo.

School aged children residing within Sloatsburg are a part of the Suffern Central School District. Suffern Central School District is one of the top Districts in Rockland County, and their mission is to educate students in the critical skills and essential knowledge necessary to be informed, responsible and active citizens in a diverse society, prepared to take the next steps in their education, careers and lives.

Sloatsburg Elementary School is the only school physically within the Village of Sloatsburg and is located at 11 2nd St, Sloatsburg, NY 10974.
